The History Of Spring Meadows Country Club

The original plan, which resulted in the organization of Spring Meadows Country Club, was conceived in 1955.  Under the leadership of Bob McInnes, our first president, several individuals joined together to form the West Side Family Golf and Country Club Committee, having chosen the name because no golf club existed on the west side of Flint at this time.

Significant strides were made in 1956, when interest advanced to the point of acquiring land consisting of a 245 acre cornfield and pasture near the Village of Linden.  A firm of golf course architects, Parkard and Wadsworth, was retained to develop plans for recreational and residential area on the acquired site.

In 1957 sufficient capital had been placed in escrow to warrant organization for registration for incorporation.  The name selected at the time was the Linden Knoll Realty Company, since the plans drawn by the architects included approximately 125 home sites surrounding a professionally designed golf course.

The process of consolidation of membership and sale of lots for the purpose of providing capital for construction of the course continued through 1957.  By the spring of 1958 a decision was made to proceed with the building of the golf course and construction was to begin.  Seeding took place in the fall of 1958 and the course was ready for play in 1959.

Memorial Day of 1959 was the dedication of Spring Meadows Country Club.  A Greens keeper and Golf Professional had been hired.  The centennial farm house on the property was used as a Club House and Pro Shop.

The significant work on the formation of the first committee was “Family”.  From the beginning, the idea was to provide a family type atmosphere, including a children’s recreational area and swimming pool.  Another admirable trait of the members was their penchant to perform all types of volunteer labor to assure the continued success of the venture.  This unselfish attitude has continued through the years, and it’s very evident at this present time.  Without such dedication by all members, Spring Meadows Country Club would not exist today.

The present clubhouse was constructed in several phases.  The basic structure was completed in the spring of 1961.  Additions were made when the pool was constructed; again when a new kitchen was added; in 1979 when substantial reconstruction and the addition of a new locker rooms and a pro shop were completed and in 1984 when the kitchen size doubled and two new dining room areas were added.  In 1995 the entire main floor was gutted and redone, greatly enhancing our dining and locker room facilities.  The latest building expansion was completed in 2002 and included the addition of offices, a new bag room, new electric cart storage area, and greatly enhanced Pro Shop.

With much gratitude to our Life Members, who donated the wonderful Tree Case in our Lobby, we instituted a Memorial Tree Program which enables our members to purchase a “living tribute” to loved ones, while beautifying our golf course.

Spring Meadows continues today in its tradition of constantly improving the facilities for the enjoyment of the entire membership.  Continued improvements to our fine golf course, clubhouse, pro shop and pool and youth areas will ensure a bright future for Spring Meadows and its membership.
